Call For Entries
This is an invitation to all sound artists living in the US and abroad to participate in the exhibition Sound Through Barriers: Sound Art and Listening in Continuous Space. The exhibition will be open in Ft. Collins, Colorado at ArtLab on Old Town Square on Friday, April 20 until April 29, 2012

About the Theme:
The theme of this exhibition of contemporary sound art will explore liminal space, and the breaking down of barriers, especially those between:
  • the artwork and the listener-viewer,
  • each piece of sound art and the other works in the space, and
  • between indoor space and outdoor space.
The separation caused by each of these constructs will be challenged with the works exhibited.

Dates and Deadlines:
  • Submission Deadline Date: February 6, 2012
  • Notification of Juror Selections: February 27, 2012
  • Deadline for Delivery/Drop off of Accepted Work: To Be Determined
  • Exhibition Dates: April 20-29, 2012

About the Gallery:
Art Lab Fort Collins is a 100% volunteer run coöperative art, music and performance initiative that turns empty store-fronts into vibrant art-spaces. Art Lab is made for and by the artists in Fort Collins. Its mission is to fill the empty retail space in Old Town Fort Collins with art, innovation, music and thought-provoking creativity. Hours of operation are based on artist and student volunteers. Art Lab promotes art in Fort Collins, providing both paid and free classes in all branches of the arts, thus promoting creativity and art appreciation through changing exhibitions, workshops, classes, lectures, and studio time. For more information, visit artlabfortcollins.com

Jurors:
The Sound Through Barriers: Sound Art and Listening in Continuous Space exhibition will be curated by C. Reider as an independent study project in Curatorial Practice, within the Museum and Gallery Studies sequence, offered through Front Range Community College, Fort Collins, Colorado. This program of study explores the role of museums in the 21st Century. During the project, students visit major museums and collections. They have opportunities to meet with curators, directors, and are steeped in museum philosophy and theory. As part of this program, students organize an exhibition from theme to installation. C. Reider is a composer of experimental sound, with a practice stretching back over twenty years.

Eligibility:
Artists must be 18 years or older.

Entry Fee:
No entry fee.

Guidelines for work:
  • Size Limit: Seeking single pieces or small groupings of pieces, not installations. Pieces should take up no more than a 5 foot by 5 foot space, no more than 6 foot tall.

  • Weight limit: 200 lbs.

  • Works will not be isolated, sound bleed is intrinsic to the theme. Works will be selected that function well in an environment with other sound present.
  • Sound generated by the artwork may be continuous, but some preference may be given to works which utilize silent moments.
  • The sound generated by any given work should not exceed 80 decibels at peak, or have adjustable volume so that appropriate sound levels can be set in the space.
