Ryan Jewell, (Columbus, Ohio)
Eight cassette player/recorders, prepared looping cassette tapes
Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Ryan+Jewell

Ryan Jewell's work supplied a number of cassette recorders to the audience and let them fully realize it as a complete piece of art. The audience was instructed that they could press play, record or stop, adjust the volume, the tape speed (via a switch on the back) and they could move around the gallery and leave the recorders anywhere in whatever record or playback state suited their whim. The looping cassettes provided by the artist were modified by adding blank sections distributed throughout the length of the cassette based on varying criteria (one-third silent, golden mean, intuitive removal). This fulfilled a request in the call for entries that specified artwork ought to incorporate silence. This piece provided the most dynamically changing sound to the environment of the gallery space, you never knew from one day to the next, from one hour to the next, what sounds these tapes were going to add.

The tapes were archived on seven of the nine days the exhibition was open, the .zip files below contain the archives titled after the day they were archived.
